Sarah Lavon Baker, 97, sang her last verse of Amazing Grace on Earth when God took her Home at 9:27 AM Friday, May 14, 2021. She passed away peacefully at the Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac, IN. Sarah was a life-long resident of Harrison Township in Pulaski County, IN. She lived her entire life in the same house on the family farm which was awarded the 100 year Hoosier Homestead Award in 2005.
Sarah was born on April 7, 1924 in rural Winamac to the late Herman and Cleda Annetta [Tuttle] Davidson. On August 12, 1939, Sarah married Chester Richard Baker in Winamac. A few years later, Sarah’s sister, Annetta married Chester’s brother, Clayton. Sarah and Chester raised three children, Cindy, Paul, and Dennis who grew up very close with their double cousins. Sarah and Chester enjoyed winters spent in Lake Okeechobee, FL. Chester passed away on March 18, 2009.
Sarah attended Winamac High School, Manchester College, and Indiana University. She was a member of the Indiana Library Federation, formerly a member of Beta Beta Latreian Sorority, and was a Mu Epsilon Toastmistress.
From1958-1984, Sarah served as the Administrator of Pulaski County Public Library (formerly Winamac-Monroe Township Public Library). She was instrumental in the health and well-being of the local library.
Sarah was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winamac, joining in 1954. She loved her church and served many years as an Elder and Organist.
Sarah enjoyed music, especially singing with her sister Annetta at weddings and listening to Christian music. She also enjoyed birdwatching and gardening. Sarah always had a beautiful flower garden!
